Children’s Eye Examinations

Children pay ZERO out of pocket for Eye Examinations* Children under the age of 19 can undergo a comprehensive eye examination at no cost. The expense of a child’s routine eye examination is covered by the Medical Service Plan (MSP) in British Columbia for children aged 18 and under.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first examination at 6 months of age. By 3 years old, a child should have a comprehensive examination. It’s essential for all children to undergo an eye examination annually.

Early eye examinations are crucial. Children require the following visual skills, which are fundamental for optical learning:

  • Excellent visual acuity at all distances
  • Accurate and comfortable eye teaming skills
  • Precise eye movement skills
  • Accurate and comfortable focusing skills

Remember, appropriate vision testing at an early age is essential to ensure your child has the necessary visual skills to excel in school.

*Children aged 18 and under with a valid B.C. Medical Services Plan (MSP) Care Card never incur additional fees for their eye examinations, meaning you pay $0 out of pocket.
